Virtual LIS practicums: Student and supervisor experiences during COVID-19, part 1

Pre-professional fieldwork helps graduates pursue specialized library careers, addressing the well-documented experience barrier that many lack. Because COVID-19 required remote learning, virtual practicums may continue, offering LIS chance to learn from experts and develop skills beyond traditional curriculum. Virtual practicum benefits have been addressed in previous literature, but student perspectives are not usually included. In this two-part series, supervisor describe challenges with their so others replicate similar experiences. Part 1 will set stage for structure of practicum, introducing background information about participating institutions, preparation experience, learning objectives, reporting course credit. The host institution site agreed modify existing in-person into a format because COVID-19. activities aligned student-defined objectives. Structure was essential success practicum. Expectations were established early on workload, communication, file management software, designated meeting spaces.
